Today in Social Studies, we were learning about hand and body gestures and what is acceptable as well as unexeptable in other countries, which got me thinking about what Russians do. So, I researched it on the internet when I got home, and found a great link about it! Here are some interesting gestures in Russia.
Greetings-
Handshakes, remove gloves first.
If a man greets a lady, he kisses her hand.
Sometimes a courtiouse bow is okay.
Gifts-
Gifts are an acceptable way of bribary.
A good gift to give is something that represents your country.
Always give a gift in odd numbers, excpesially flowers, as even numbers symbolize funerals.
Gender roles-
Men open doors for women.
Flashy dresses are looked down upon.
Women shouldn't be seen alone in public.
One superstition is if a women sits on a corner of a table, she will never marry.
Gestures-
It is very rude to point.
The 'OK' sign is vulgar.
Folding your arms behind your head is rude.
Exposing the soles of your shoes is also rude.
Dressing-
Always remove your shoes when going into a house.
Check in your coat at a designated place.
If in a buisness meeting, ask before removing your coat. Sometimes it is know as "stripping" in a formal setting.
Dress conservativly.
Buisness meetings-
Arrive on time, although the Russian may arrive 1-2 hours late to see if you are patient.
A meeting can get very intense and people might start arguing.
Do not look at your watch, it shows impatience and is considered rude.
Random tips-
Wash your hands before eating.
It is bad luck to whistle indoors.
If someone wishes you good fortune, spit three times over your shoulder to avoid jinxing the well wishes.
